It is a few years since Tocilizumab (TCZ) was approved for use in treating GCA and it has proved to be very effective in certain cases. Its use, however, has been very restricted because of cost considerations. It is exciting to report that another drug is seeking approval for use in the UK with applications currently in the hands of SMC in Scotland and NICE in England and Wales. Like TCZ, the new drug, Upadacitinib, was originally developed for Rheumatoid Arthritis but has been shown to have beneficial outcomes with GCA. We will keep you updated with developments.
